If she needs a translator just for simple coversations then how does she fill her role as a commander and give orders to a large army in a huge battle like the end of season3? Just like Toph it would have been interesting to see how she adapted to such a crippling disadvantage for a soldier in a fight, and how she managed to find her own ways to work around it, and maybe even develop strength's that other soldiers around her dont have as a result. But they got caught up too much in the message that "disabled people dont have to be held back by their disability", that it mostly just became a tacked on attribute that feels like its just there to fill a representation checkbox instead of being a real part of the character and her actually having her struggle with it. I think the writers for this show made Amaya so unaffected by her deafness out of good intentions. The writers didnt just ignore her disability when it would be inconvenient like its being done with Amaya. Not only do we have scenes, in which her blindness negatively affects her and she struggles with it (she cant read, and gets uncomfortable and disoriented when she is not on solid ground), but it was ultimately the act of aknowledging her blindness as a weakness by her writers, and having her overcome it in her own ways that turned her into such a powerful character. Whenever she is in battle its like the show pretends her deafness doesnt exist in those moments and is simply ignored, which is a discredit to the character itself.Īt this point, i want to point towards Toph from the last airbender show as a comparison who is a much better written character imo who also has to deal with a major disability. When it comes to combat and fighting scenes, her disability never really affects her (neither that she is a woman who might have to go up against physically stronger male opponents, but thats a different topic). The fact that she is deaf never really impacts her in a negative way other than when she needs a translator to talk to people in sign language.
